Turn Aspirations into Goals | Practice

This is the 3rd installment in the exploration of my goal setting habits. Part 1 was about 3 words and Part 2 was about planning. This one circles back and boils it all down to a daily intention for these goals. It’s also the hardest part of the process to commit to and I admittedly have not been great about this part in the past.

So how do these lofty goals, which get broken down into smaller chunks actually get done? A practice I have read and experienced but haven’t been as diligent as I probably could be. A daily practice. One that sets your day up for success and brings your goals to the forefront of your mind. I have been doing it every day since the beginning of the year (15 days now). Depending on what you read it can take 7 – 60 days of doing something consecutively for it to become a habit. I want this to be a habit that lasts.

So what do I do? It starts with ‘Why.’ Usually, with my morning coffee, I sit down with a notebook and write out a few sentences of my ‘Why’ the thing that keeps me going and doing what I do. Right now it is:

I am a portrait photographer. I photograph the Artist, Creative, Maker, Mover and Doer, in us all. We are artists of our passions and pursuits and alive when we live through our art. Revealing one of the truest versions of ourselves. That self is how the world deserves to see you.

Writing this every day has been a great exercise in developing that and putting words to my desires and goals.

From there I may write a little more about the intention for the day. Include one of the 3 words as a reminder of those motivations, and then plan out my day in a rough schedule. A to-do list if you will, but more time based so that I can keep myself on target. Referencing my goals occasionally to make sure I am doing at least one thing that day that makes the ship go faster or gets me closer to where I want to be. I have tried this before but this time feels different. Maybe it’s the trigger of doing it every morning with my coffee or the full circle approach. I’m not sure but am excited to see how it plays out and how far I get with my goals.
