There is a certain skill set any entrepreneur in any industry needs to further the business. Mastering the Craft of your art can set you a part in so many ways. This is part a personal experience in my pursuit in mastering my craft as well as sharing some recent accomplishments that has shown me how much I have grown.
How do you measure Mastery?
I believe mastery, as it pertains to being in business, is more about producing consistent results with the skills you have so you can put more energy into the service behind it. So how do you measure that especially as someone in an “arts” field?
For some comparing ourselves or being judged and critiqued is not something we think about and may even avoid. However, having your work looked at with highly trained eyes and more years of experience can lead to some insights you wouldn’t normally find on your own. As a visual art form portrait photography is more easily viewed and critiqued.
While the measurement is still somewhat subjective there are a lot of things that can be learned from having your work combed over by a master. It may show you things that you tend to do that you may not be aware of or ways to improve. That, to me, is where mastery comes in.
There are many opinions that can be sought after for critique but I want to find the most reputable sources possible so I can get the best experience. Submitting my work for accreditation as a portrait photographer through The Portrait Masters Awards and accreditation program is where I have found to be the best place for me.
Leveling Up
I have submitted to this program before, see this post as well as this one. At first, was just to see how my work stood up and what the images would score. My latest submission, See images below, received more consistent scores that were the highest of all my entries thus far. I am setting myself on track to earn my Accreditation. I made a pact with another photographer friend to earn it by September 2021.
This goal is not about vanity, though it does give a little confidence boost. For me, it is more about how I can create work for my clients at the highest level possible. I love working with individuals and learning about their passions and purpose. My work is meant to showcase that individual as they should be seen and as they should see themselves.
So, I ask you how are you furthering your work, your craft? Are you an artist or small business owner who is just coasting along? I invite you to set goals for your work and to master your craft.
