Josh Newton, a computer programmer by day and a composer by night, sat down with me before our photo shoot to talk about his work, the composition process, and his connection to music. A fascinating conversation and thrilled to have this as part of my Why Music project.
A fellow University of Southern Maine School of Music grad who found his real passion in the musical universe as a composer. Finding inspiration in poems from classic writers and setting the text to music has been his focus. Relying a lot on the creative inspiration to create these works and often times spending days on it without any connection to the outside world. An all-consuming process takes over after a piece of music has festered and swirled in his mind for a time. All to express something; an emotion, a feeling, a place.
Josh relates composing to his day job of programming code. Trying to reach an end goal and having to figure out how to get there. Whether it is a computer program to do a specific function, to a piece of music that is meant to evoke an emotion. They both do have a lot of similarities. It was such a great conversation. Watch the video below to hear him speak to his connection to music.
