Why Music | Portrait Series

Going back to my roots with my creativity and where my participation in arts began. Music. And combining it with my other love, portrait photography; with a portrait project exploring the human connection to the power of music. Photographing musicians of all ages, abilities, and journeys and diving deep into their own pursuit of the art of music.

Portrait of Choral Music Educator, Rob Westerberg

As a musician myself, I have had many musical moments where you truly feel the music and connect with everyone else performing with you on a different level. From rehearsals to performances in large auditoriums where everything and everyone aligns just right and magic happens. Your heart breaks open with energy and emotion fills your body and drives the music forward. Those are the moments that we should live for. It is not exclusive to music but all art, whatever your art is. Art is meant to be felt. For me, music and portrait photography are the only things where I have been able to feel that and truly let myself open up. That is a side of you that is so vulnerable but is the truest version of you that can be expressed and that is what the world needs to see.

This project may take many forms and may change throughout the year-long focus. My main goal is to ask the questions and really feel the “why” behind the music. There will be quotes and maybe some videos similar to my Artist Profiles but more focused on music and the musicians. Keeping the styling, backgrounds, and lighting simple so that there are no distractions from the artist being photographed. It can be difficult to open up but I am right there with you and feel it too.

Follow along as I interview, photograph, and explore more deeply the power of music.

I really love getting to know our clients through an in-depth process that brings out the best of everyone. Seeing them break through their own blocks and insecurities to let their true self come through is inspiring.

Everyone is an artist of their passion and purpose. Finding ways to keep doing what we can't live without. We come alive when we are living this. That is our art and that is the side of you that needs to be seen. To me, this is the most authentic version of ourselves we can show the world.

For some, their art is is painting or music. For others, it is helping with financial planning or guiding people through their lives. Helping people reconnect to their art through portraits and giving them images of themselves they are proud of is why I love what I do.

What is your art?
