One of the best things about photographing portraits is seeing someone’s personality really come through. Or personalities, in Aaron’s case. He is an extraordinary pianist and composer and we got together to do a photo session as part of my Why Music portrait project.
I met Aaron during my undergraduate studies at the USM School of Music. He was the go-to accompanist for the school and it was very apparent why. He was great it. I connected with him recently about this project and learned so much more about his musical career.
Exceptionally talented from the start, and attending a conservatory in Boston around such prolific musicians such as John Williams and John Adams, only heightened his craft. Studying everything from classical to Broadway, Jazz, Harpsichord and even organ. He had a philosophy and drive and he set out to do everything. Say no was not an option.
His sense of humor is just as refined and I loved collaborating with him on these images. He brought props galore. From a toy piano to busts of composers, and even some feather pens for “Composing.” We did a lot during the shoot but it was the interview before we started photographing that I really enjoyed. Getting to hear about his connection to music and a moment that stuck out to him as a pivotal moment he knew he wanted to be a composer. Watch the video below for more images and hear him describe that experience. He also provided the background music.
