My experience with horses is slim, only one time on a horse and haven’t had much interaction with them. They truly are amazing creatures and have a unique relationship with their riders. This young equestrian rider and her horse Timmins sure has a special bond with her horse.
The sport of equestrian riding is made up of 3 main events. Jumping, which is just that. Cross Country, which is a course through terrain with obstacles set up and is timed. And Dressage, the fancier event that shows the grace and poise of the horse and rider. I learned so much about the sport from Winona and really got to see her relationship with her horse, which is vital in the sport. Watching her walk and maneuver with him was like seeing best friends at the barn.
I don’t often show outdoor portraits but it really was fun to show the environment that is the horse barn and riding school where she boards Timmins. From the formal dressage attire to some more casual outfits we got a nice variety. Applying some of what I do in a studio setting was a fun challenge. She really wanted to get some images of her and him for her senior photos. I think we accomplished that and then some.
I mean I can’t get over some of these portraits. Coming from outdoor portraits before really diving into studio work it is kind of nice to go back to it with a new set of skills. I love being a portrait photographer where I can create images like this that are a little different with some depth. These are definitely not what senior portraits looked like when I was in high school.
