Sarah Bailey, Music Educator and Singer

A musician, any artist really, needs a portrait of themselves that really shows who they are as a performer or artist. I absolutely loved photographing Singer and music educator Sarah Bailey to update her headshots. We also sat down and talk music for my Why Music Portrait Project. The passion and drive she has for her students and her craft as a singer is inspiring.

This shoot was a lot of fun as we were able to utilize the new performing arts facility at Greely High School where Sarah teaches. It has a beautiful glass entryway that was perfect for setting up our own little studio. Starting simple with a black on black look with the light coming over the back of the backdrop and then moving around the space in different outfits and configurations. We even popped into the auditorium to get a couple of images in the seats. I love the images that came out of it and a great place to do the shoot since it is her space.

As a music teacher, Sarah has many different responsibilities, but at the top of her list are the choirs she directs. A conductor at a music festival and a professor we both had at the University of Southern Main School of Music, Dr. Robert Russel, both had great impact on her and she applies those techniques in her classroom today. Drawing from non-musical practices and approaches as well as very tactical and technical ideas to impact her students and bring them through the musicial journey.

I want them to become more whole people becuase they have experienced music
