Man of Mystery | Self-portrait Study

With all this time and no one to photograph, other than myself, a few characters seem to be creeping in and wanting to be photographed. Mysterious and also a different side of me. Another self-portrait study to share.

Using another one of my father’s hats and a peacoat that I had just put away for the spring I had a vision in mind and I think I got close to what I was looking for. Something to add to my series of “The Hats We Wear.”

This series is evolving and growing. Something that was meant to show some of the jobs we have as people. In particular going with the saying about wearing many hats. It has gone deep and now been realized as a not just the jobs and titles we hold but also the various sides of our self that each of us may have or experience.

I initially thought this would be a self-portrait for each of the various characters I had already sketched. But during the creative process I have come to think it may not be all me. Expanding the personalities and people and the hats they wear.

With this self-portrait study, I wanted it to be a dark and stormy look. A detective story if you will. The light was created initially to look like a street light overhead and then as the shoot progressed it evolved and I just went with it. I tend to not keep track of settings and really only go with feeling the image. The fingers and mind just work through the dials and numbers to get where I want. Which, can lead to incredible results.
