Benefits of Digital Background Change for Headshots

When your office isn’t the most interesting, why not opt for a digital background change for headshots? Let’s talk through why this might be a good option for your company’s corporate headshots.

This option is great for offices that do not have a suitable place that could be used for an environmental background. An environmental background can give potential customers a few ways to connect to the company, as it shows what they would see when they visit, both the people and the space or company branding.

So what can be used for a background?

I prefer utilizing what is already there and matching the lighting to make it as natural-looking as possible. There are a few things that I take into account when figuring out what the background should be—perspective, distance, and light. The background can be a conference room, open office setting, reception area, or other space that might be fitting to the company. If it’s possible to find a place in their office that could work, I prefer that, since it would give a little more context to the images being taken in the same place.

The folks at United Insurance here in Portland, Maine, came to me with this very scenario; they wanted to try with their leadership team first before doing it for everyone in the company. After talking with them and doing a brief site visit beforehand, we figured out a couple of options for backgrounds. Then, when we did the headshots, I photographed everyone on a light gray background so they could easily be extracted and then placed in the digital background. See the options below.

Opting for the digital background change for headshots allowed their company to have more dynamic images that incorporated the company logo and the man’s entrance to their headquarters. A glass door entering their reception area with their logo etched on it was what they liked best. Clients would also have to go through that door for any meetings at the office.
