Since the inception of my Artist Series project I have had nothing but amazing support from both photographers and non-photographers alike. I can’t say enough how thankful I am for that support in my pursuit of this new found passion in the wide world of photography. Connecting with other artists and other passionate people has been with my for quite some time and I am finally using that innate draw to other’s passion to create something and spread art. This latest artist profile has been a long time coming through many collaborations and I think it has given me a springboard for future projects and inspired me to work my ass off and create. Below is the video slideshow of images from the collaboration with Dave Surkin.
I hope to reconnect my subjects with their own art, as well as share their art with the world, through portraits showcasing that passion.
That is my ultimate goal with this and I am seeing so many possibilities with this project. From Yoga instructors to other photographers to fitness coaches. I love connecting with these passionate people because it brings me back to a place of desire, desire to work on something. To create. The simple act of talking about their art and passion enlightens a fire within people and that is what is infectious. This is what portraiture is all about, capturing someone’s true essence, what they live for comes through in an image that doesn’t need any words to describe. I can’t help but want to share their passion with other people, and this is how. We all are artists of our passions and Dave here is no exception.
Co-founder of Cast Aside Productions, a creative production company here in Portland Maine, Dave Surkin is an innovative voice in the theater community. Having been involved with theater since a young age, watching movie musicals at his grandmother’s house to working in New York City, it truly is in his blood. He believes in paying the actors in his productions, and giving them ways to earn more through ticket sales. A practice not seen in the Portland theater community, according to him. I really enjoyed interviewing him and talking art.
Now a little bit of our background. I met him when I started playing ultimate frisbee in this new sports league in Portland, PortSports. He was co-founder of that with is wife, Morgan. We collaborate a few times on photo shoots for their website and portraits of their league managers, so he has seen my work progress and I think was an easy decision to work with me on this particular project. Now I’ll let Dave do the talking.
Special thanks to several people who helped put this together:
Good friend of mine, media man Chris Cavallari, of Filmosity Productions and Part Time Vagabond, for helping with the audio recording and interview, as well as being an awesome assistant.
Also, huge thank you goes out to Sarah Bouchard, artist and artistic director of the Masonic Temple, where the shoot took place.
