I often ask clients what kind of background they would like. Many have no idea or preference initially. Here are some thoughts on the best background for headshots.
Now to be clear, there are some variables that need to be taken into account especially if you are running your own business or have to match your company’s other headshots. The most important thing to think about for any of these is that the background is not distracting or takes away from your face.
Solid Color
A clean, modern look that can work for many different applications. It also helps you stand out the best because of the solid background. Now, what color? That can depend on your business or profession. For corporate headshots for companies, it is usually a neutral gray or white and sometimes black. If you are just needing it for Linkedin or social media then you can choose whichever color you like. If you are working with a photographer they should be able to work with you on this and make sure the lighting is appropriate so you look your best. This is my go-to background for headshots in the studio.

Blurred Background
Whether it’s an urban setting or nature this can give a little more appeal and interest to your headshot. However, make sure the background is blurred enough so as to not have any recognizable shapes or faces as that is where the eyes will want to go instead of connecting with you in the image. Lighting can also be tricky here if you are only working with the light that is available; as color and shadows can create strange effects on the face. Work with your photographer so you are the focal point in the image.
