Talking in a previous post about what we actually do, I wanted to explore that a little more and give a little insight into what I look for while photographing anyone. In writing it’s fairly simple, connection, but a little more difficult to describe and bring out.
A portrait can be a powerful thing. It can stop you dead in your tracks and elicit strong emotions from intrigue to love, from insecurity to confidence, and more. There is a reason why iconic portraits like Steve McCurry’s Afghan Girl, and the story behind it, are some well know. When the subject being photographed connects to something inside them and the photographer connects with that there is magic. Some would argue that having your portrait made can do the same. How can an image and going through the process of having a portrait made bring up such feelings? It’s all about connection.
We all are Artists
I firmly believe that we all are artists of our passions and creatively seek ways to pursue things that fill our soul and spirit. That thing, or things, is our art. From our family and loved ones, our career, to traditional art forms like painting or music. It is unique to each individual. One of the most authentic versions of ourselves comes alive when we talk and live through our art. From talking about your family, practicing your painting, or helping others. Time can seem to stand still and you get into a flow without any hesitation of doing. It just happens and you want more. Have you felt that before? Hard to describe with words right? That’s the connection I look for while interacting with someone in front of my camera. It really can transform someone when they are talking about something that gives them life.
This spark to follow our art can bring the shyest, quietest person into their own confidence. That connection to their passion lights that fire and brings forth excitement for their art and craft may bring forth a side of their persona that may not be seen very often. The world deserves to see that and so do you. That is what I look for when It really is a powerful thing. Reconnect to your inner artist and live through your art.
